The Mini Submarine get their first three points of the season away to Racing Club
Villarreal B kicked off their time in LaLiga SmartBank at a stadium used to first division football, El Sardinero. The Yellows did their homework and go home with three deserved points after playing well at a difficult stadium in front of intense fans, thanks to goals from Pablo Iñiguez and Juan Carlos Arana.
The Mini Submarine didn’t lose their nerves in the opening minutes, when the home fans were celebrating their own return to the second division in style, and came out playing when they won the ball back in their own half. Matheus Aiás had the best chance for Racing, but Jorgensen covered the near post perfectly and turned the ball behind for a corner. The Cantabrian team had a few more chances in the first half, pushed on by their fans, but without creating too much danger. Vicente had a chance from outside the area, but his shot failed to find Filip’s goal.
In the second half, Jorgensen again saved the Yellows from conceding the first goal of the game after a clear Racing chance on the counter-attack. Haissem had the visitors’ first shot of the second half when he slalomed down the right flank and cut inside for a shot. However, it was not until stoppage time that the first goal came, Pablo Iñiguez pouncing on a rebound in the six-yard box. Three minutes later, and to end the game on a high, Arana, who had come on for Collado, scored the second from outside the box.
Miguel Álvarez’s boys thus secured their first three points of the season at a tough El Sardinero stadium and will face their first home game in the second tier next Friday at 8pm CEST against SD Eibar at the Mini Estadi.
