Javi Calleja backs his side to pick themselves up and carry on fighting to stay up

Villarreal manager Javi Calleja appeared in front of the press after the Yellow Submarine’s loss at the Benito Villamarín. The Yellows head coach was frustrated with the lack of luck his team is having in recent games: “Football is being cruel to us. Now we need to keep our heads high and pick ourselves up. This season has been very difficult. When we stay up, the season won’t have such a bad taste. This team will not throw in the towel. We will fight until the end.”

Furthemore, Calleja underlined his total support and trust for Santi Cazorla, who took the responsibility to take the penalty that would have drawn the Yellows level: “He’s hurt. He’s sad because he took responsibility and he wasn’t able to score the penalty. He’s a very experienced player and he knows he has all the support and the trust of the dressing room. He’s an example to follow, and this situation is down to all of us.”

Finally, Calleja recognised that Villarreal will continue looking for consistency in their play: “We need to maintain the balance between attack and defence. We need to be a complete and balanced team.”
