Villarreal fall short in a match where they were without luck and a cutting edge

Villarreal lost to Real Valladolid (1-2) at the Estadio de la Cerámica. The Yellows conceded the first goal very quickly and had to row against the tide throughout the match. The lack of accuracy also condemned a team that could not find the goal and conceded the defeat.

The Submarine were back in front of their home fans after their impressive win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu (2-3). In addition, Quique Setién’s side were coming into the game on a high after collecting 16 of their last 18 points.

Despite this, things got off to a bad start for Villarreal. In the second minute, Real Valladolid took the lead. The visitors combined well inside the box and Amallah finished off the move with a subtle finish past Reina. The Submarine’s game was going to be a tough one, and they had to come from behind early on.

The Yellows played an open game, as they sought to trouble their opponents’ goal. On the quarter of an hour mark, the referee disallowed Villarreal’s equaliser. Morales was offside by a few millimetres and Chukwueze’s subsequent goal was disallowed for this reason.

Ten minutes into the second half, Samu Chukwueze could have pulled one back. The Nigerian striker failed to finish with his right foot after getting past Masip in the area. On the hour mark, Quique Setién moved the bench and introduced a triple substitution. Nico Jackson, Alberto Moreno and Étienne Capoue came on to try to equalise.

Again, 20 minutes from time, Samu Chukwueze could have scored again. A shot from the edge of the area from a personal move bounced off the post. Villarreal’s goal came in the 74th minute. Capoue’s shot from the edge of the area cut the deficit and boosted the Submarine’s hopes.

The last 20 minutes saw several attempts from Villarreal, against a Real Valladolid side who were unsettling the fans by wasting time. The Yellows could not find the goal and came away from the at Estadio de la Cerámica empty-handed.
