The Yellow Submarine take on the English side at the Emirates Stadium, with the match broadcast live on GOL (Wednesday, 7:00pm)
Villarreal CF face one of their toughest pre-season challenges this Wednesday, 6 August, at 7:00pm, as they visit the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal FC. The match, which will be the penultimate summer test for Marcelino García Toral’s side before the league campaign begins, will be broadcast live on GOL.
A Rivalry with Rich History
The clash between the two clubs rekindles a rivalry filled with memorable European moments. The most painful memory for the Yellows came in 2006, when the English side eliminated Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after a tightly contested tie (1-0 in London and 0-0 in Vila-real), with Juan Román Riquelme’s missed penalty in the final minutes of the second leg still echoing in the collective memory.
However, the story took a turn in 2021, when the Yellow Submarine got their revenge in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. Under Unai Emery, Villarreal knocked out Arsenal with a 2-1 home win and a goalless draw in London, booking their place in the final of a competition they would go on to win against Manchester United—claiming the first major title in the club’s history.
Arsenal, a Giant of British Football
With over a century of history, Arsenal FC are one of the most decorated and recognisable clubs in English football. Founded in 1886, their honours list includes 13 Premier League titles, 14 FA Cups, and a strong track record in European competitions. In terms of overall trophies won, they are the third most successful club in English football history.
Their home ground is the Emirates Stadium, inaugurated in 2006, and will host this high-profile encounter. With a capacity of over 60,000 and cutting-edge architecture, it is one of the most iconic stadiums in Europe.
The London side enjoyed a remarkable 2024/25 season, staying in the Premier League title race until the final weeks and reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Head coach Mikel Arteta and players such as Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice and William Saliba were among the standout performers.
There are also notable links between Villarreal and Arsenal, with several illustrious players having represented both clubs—most notably Santi Cazorla and Robert Pires. The former shone for both teams, making his mark in the Premier League with his creativity and vision. Pires, meanwhile, made the move to the Yellow Submarine after starring for Arsenal’s famed “Invincibles” side, bringing experience and quality to Villarreal during his four seasons at El Madrigal.
Don’t forget—the match will be broadcast live on GOL this Wednesday at 7:00pm.
