The Yellows’ midfielder made his debut with a goal 71 seconds after entering the field against Cyprus (6-0)
A dream debut. Álex Baena played his first game for the Spanish national team in the 6-0 win over Cyprus. The talented Villarreal player scored the fifth of La Roja’s six goals at Los Cármenes. He did so just 71 seconds after coming on, emulating ex-Yellow Pau Torres, who did the same on his debut against Malta in November 2019, when he found the net 59 seconds after coming on.
The eight Villarreal players who have scored goals for Spain’s senior national team during their time as Yellows are as follows: Gerard Moreno, Santi Cazorla, Joan Capdevila, Yeremy Pino, Mario Gaspar, Marcos Senna, Pau Torres and now Baena too.
Likewise, Baena after his debut has become the 20th Villarreal player to make his debut for the Spain national team after Unai Vergara, Guayre, Senna, Capdevila, Angel López, Cazorla, Diego López, Carlos Marchena, Bruno Soriano, Borja Valero, Mario Gaspar, Sergio Asenjo, Denis Suárez, Rodrigo Hernández, Pablo Fornals, Raúl Albiol, Gerard, Pau, Yeremy and Baena.
