The Submarine shine in a magic night at the Estadio de la Cerámica against Young Boys

Villarreal got an important and deserved win against Young Boys in the Champions League. Unai Emery’s side needed the win to stay alive in the group and have the chance to qualify for the Round of 16.

The Submarine started the game by dominating. The first real chance was a Francis Coquelin effort from the edge of the area which Faivre saved at full stretch. From the resulting corner, the French midfielder wasn’t able to connect well with his header, which went across the Swiss goal. David Wagner’s side tried to cause problems on the counter, but the Yellows’ defence were permanently wary of the threat. Unai Emery’s side, however, tried various types of attack to break the stalemate.

With half an hour on the clock, Alfonso Pedraza flew down the left wing and his low shot went close to the opposition goal. The opportunities were falling to Villarreal, but they were finding it hard to get the opener. However, Étienne Capoue capitalised on a loose ball in the six-yard box to score the first of the night. After the opener, Villarreal were pushing for more, and Danjuma could have scored it from the edge of the box after a sensational Boulaye Dia pass.

At the start of the second half, Young Boys had a great chance which Gero Rulli pushed out for a corner. With ten minutes gone in the second half, Fassnacht thought he had scored the equaliser, but the goal was correctly ruled out by VAR for offside. Minutes later, Raúl Albiol made a great goal-line clearance with Rulli out of his box. However, an electric Danjuma tried to get the second with quick transitions, while Manu Trigueros and Capoue could also have added another.

When it seemed like it was going to be a tight end to the game, Danjuma scored the second and definitive goal, finding space at the near post, to seal a magical European night at La Cerámica. Villarreal therefore got their second win in the group stage, which at the moment sees them in the top two of the group.

Next up for Villarreal is a game this Sunday 7th November at 2pm CET at the Estadio de la Cerámica against Getafe CF.
