Sara Monforte has called on her side to be a strong block in defence to have chances of getting a good result against Atlético de Madrid

Villarreal Women head coach Sara Monforte appeared in front of the media to analyse the build-up to the game against Atlético de Madrid (Sunday, 12pm CET).

 “We can’t wait”

“The team is in good shape, they’re training well and competing well. We can’t wait. We want to play. This week we’ve got the game against Atlético de Madrid and then we’ve got Madrid CF at home, which is important for us.”

A direct and competitive team

“Atlético de Madrid have a great manager. Óscar Fernández has been a breath of fresh air for the team. They strengthened well this summer and have a great squad. They’re a direct, attacking team. They’re a very competitive side.”

Compete well and be in the game at the end

“We’re expecting a game where we’ll have to cope well with their dominance. They’re coming into the match after a number of draws. They won’t be happy and they’ll want to show up at home. We have to play with the cards we have, compete well and be in the game at the end. The idea is to still be alive at the end of the tie. They are very good physically at the end of the matches, but we need to do that too. We need to be strong.”

Gaining confidence and trusting in the team’s attributes

“The emotional side can make a difference in football. We have to have our players being confident in their job, when they take to the pitch, without respecting the opposition too much. We need to be ourselves. We don’t only have to react when we’ve conceded and we have nothing to lose. We want to be ourselves from the first minute.”
