An example on and off the pitch
Virginia Torrecilla Reyes (04/09/1994) is a player with a great track record and a lot of experience. She also stands out for her quality and good understanding of the game. Virginia began her career in football in her birthplace Mallorca, playing for various teams such as Badia Cala Millor, Club Deportivo Servense and Unión Deportiva Collerense, making her debut on 3rd September 2009 in the top flight at just 14 years of age.
At that time, the midfielder was already beginning to stand out. In fact, in 2011 she was called up by the Spanish national team to play in the European U19 Championships, where she finished runner-up. In 2012 she signed for FC Barcelona, with whom she won three league titles and two Copas de la Reina, and also played in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. During this period, Torrecilla made her debut with the Spanish national team, participating in the 2013 and 2017 European Championships, and in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.
Between 2015 and 2019, the Balearic footballer decided to broaden her experience outside our territory, signing for Montpellier H.S.C. (France). In 2019, Virginia returned to Spain to play for Atlético de Madrid, adding to her trophy cabinet by winning a Copa de la Reina and a Supercopa. However, this last period was not plain sailing.
In May 2020, Torrecilla had to undergo surgery for a brain tumour. As a result, the Spaniard was forced to step away from the field of play to fight the most important battle of her life. After a long struggle, Torrecilla overcame cancer, returning to play an official match 683 days after the ordeal began. On 23rd January 2022, Virginia was able to enjoy a few minutes in the final of the Spanish Super Cup.
Now, Virginia Torrecilla arrives at Villarreal Women’s with the excitement of returning to enjoy the sport she has loved all her life.
