Ready to compete! Villarreal Women are set to begin their second campaign in the top flight of Spanish football. Sara Monforte’s side kick off against Real Madrid this Saturday, at 4pm CEST at the Mini Estadi. Season-ticket holders can accompany the Submarine completely free of charge by showing their season-ticket card at the entrance.

A summer trophy and a high-level pre-season

The Yellows had a demanding pre-season ,with a lot of top-flight opponents, and have impressed. They started of perfectly, winning the COTIF tournament after beating SPA Alicante (0-6), Mislata CF (0-4), Elche CF (1-0) and Argentina U20s (1-2). Then they got a win against CA Osasuna (1-2), three draws against Valencia CF (1-1), Levante UD (2-2), and RCD Espanyol (1-1) and a defeat against Deportivo Alavés (1-0).

Six summer signings

Villarreal Women have brought in six new players over the summer. The team went to the market in search of reinforcements to consolidate the exciting project. In defence, Cristina Cubedo (UDG Tenerife) and Lucía Gómez (Levante UD) have arrived; María Llompart (SD Eibar) and Claudia Iglesias (Atlético de Madrid) are the players in midfield; and up front Fatou Kanteh (Sporting de Huelva) and Rocío García (FC Barcelona B) will bring talent, speed and goals to the team.

The additions offer variants and alternatives to a very consolidated squad with Elena de Toro and Carmen Carbonell in goal; Lara Mata Irene Miguélez, Yenifer Giménez, Nerea Pérez and Pancha Lara in defence; María Cienfuegos, Paola Soldevila, Ainoa Campo and Estefa Lima in midfield; and an attack led by Tere Morató, Sheila Guijarro, Belén Martínez and Vera Rico.

A new league

The top flight of women’s football in Spain has reinvented itself. From this season onwards, it will be called Liga F.
