The Yellows deserved to more against the side from the Canary Islands

Villarreal Women and UDG Tenerife met on Saturday afternoon at the Mini Estadi of the José Manuel Llaneza Training Ground. The visitors, virtually saved, came back from Sheila Guijarro’s early goal in two minutes to take the three points from Vila-real despite a good performance from the Yellows.

The game couldn’t have got off to a better start. In the third minute of the game, the Yellows stopped a Tenerife side’s onslaught and went on a dizzying counter-attack in which Belén, inside the box, gave the ball to Sheila, who beat the visiting goalkeeper with her left foot to put the Yellows ahead and score her eleventh goal of the season.

However, UDG Tenerife equalised soon after. Patri Gavira headed a set piece that Carmen Carbonell almost cleared off the line, but after hitting the crossbar, the ball ended up in the back of the net.

After the yellow kick-off, the visitors managed to regain the ball and set up a new attacking move that ended with a cross into the heart of the area that Blom finished off at full stretch.

Despite the blow in just two minutes, Villarreal Women did not give up and went in search of an equaliser. Kanteh and Belén threatened the away team’s defence on the flanks, but Sara Monforte’s side were unable to find the back of the net before the break, with UDG going into the half-time break 1-2 up.

The second half started with changes for the Yellows. Pilar García and Belén went to the bench to bring on Tere Morató and Irene Miguélez.

Villarreal Women were the team that created the most danger in the early stages of the second half. In fact, in the 55th minute Nerea came close to equalising with a shot from inside the area that went wide after being deflected by a Tenerife defender.

Monforte’s side did not give up and continued to threaten Aline Reis’ goal. First Sheila headed just wide after a good cross from Llompart and then the midfielder herself headed home from the penalty spot from Kanteh’s cross from the edge of the area, which was another great chance for the Yellows in the second half.

And what a double chance for Villarreal Women in the 78th minute! Sheila, almost falling inside the area due to the intense marking of a defender, shot a ball that Aline Reis parried and was left dead on the edge of the area. The ball was met by Cienfu, who struck the crossbar.

Despite deserving much more, Villarreal Women were defeated by UDG Tenerife. However, the Yellows remain out of the relegation spots for another day and will try to increase the gap by winning their next game against Levante UD (Saturday, 6:15pm CEST).
