The Submarine will face Wolfsburg and Olympique Lyon in the Emirates Stadium
On the 25th and 26th of July, the Emirates Cup 2015 will kick off with Villarreal, Wolfsburg and Olympique Lyon as guests. The competition, which is hosted by Arsenal in every summer since 2007, will feature two matches for every team to find out who wins the cup. Villarreal will avoid Arsenal, as they will face Wolfsburg on the 25th and Olympique Lyon on the 26th of July, both at 3 pm (2pm London Time).
Attacking play will be hugely awarded during this competition. Next to the standard format of three points for a win and one point for a draw, an additional point will be given for each goal scored. If teams are level on points, as well as on goal difference, the amount of shots on target will be the decisive statistic.
Villarreal’s CEO, Fernando Roig Negueroles, believes participating in the Emirates Cup is very exciting, as well as an opportunity: “It’s an honor to compete in a competition, held by a club as distinguished as Arsenal. Not only will we get the satisfaction of measuring ourselves to the excellent teams of Olympique and Wolfsburg, but also the benefits of the build-up for the season in an important stage of the preparation.”
Arsenal have won the competition three times (2007, 2009, 2010), while Hamburger SV (2008), NY Red Bulls (2011), Galatasaray (2013) and Valencia (2014) have won the other editions. There was no edition in 2012, due to the Summer Olympics.
