The Submarine beat Toledo with goals by Adrián (og), Bakambu and Samu Castillejo
Villarreal started off on the right foot in the Copa del Rey with a 0-3 victory over CD Toledo at the Salto del Caballo stadium, in a match corresponding to the first leg of the Round of 32. The goals were scored by Adrián (own goal), Cédric Bakambu and Samu Castillejo.
With ten changes to the starting eleven from the last league match against Deportivo Alavés, Fran Escribá’s side took control of the match to take down the team from Toledo, who play in Group II in the Second Division B. The only player to remain in the starting lineup was Manu Trigueros, who was the captain of the Submarine tonight.
Two sharp blows around the quarter of an hour mark were enough for the Yellows to take away the win. And Cheryshev was key on both occasions. For the first goal, the number 7 set off down the left wing and put in a purposeful, driven cross that Adrián intercepted, but turned into his own net in the process (0-1, m. 14).
Only five minutes later the Yellows’ second came. It was Cheryshev again who approached the area with the ball and put in a well-placed cross for Bakambu to smash home first time. The shot took the Toledo goalkeeper by surprise, who could do nothing to keep it out.
Villarreal had their opponents under control for the rest of the match, looking to catch the locals out on the counterattack. And this is exactly how the 0-3 came in the 81st minute. Rodrigo laid the ball off to Samu Castillejo and the number 19 hit a powerful shot into the back of the locals’ net to sentence the match.
The second leg of this Round of 32 tie in the Copa del Rey will be played at El Madrigal stadium next Tuesday, 20th December (7pmCET).
