Unai Emery’s team return to winning ways in LaLiga, beating the side from Madrid thanks to a Trigueros goal
Villarreal are smiling once more in LaLiga. The Yellows overcame Getafe and returned to winning ways in the league thanks to a Manu Trigueros goal. The three points were important, as was gaining confidence and getting two wins in a row.
It was an important win for Villarreal, who hosted Getafe CF at the Estadio de la Cerámica, hoping to pick up a win in the league. The Yellows went into the game on the back of an important win last Tuesday against Young Boys (2-0) in the UEFA Champions League.
Unai Emery looked to run the match in the middle of the pitch, lining up with four midfielders. Étienne Capoue, Francis Coquelin, Dani Parejo and Manu Trigueros were in charge of taking control with their quality. Serge Aurier and Pervis Estupiñán attacked from out wide, giving good service to Paco Alcácer and Arnaut Danjuma.
The Basque manager’s tweaking worked quickly. In the tenth minute, a cross from out wide by Estupiñán was flicked on by Alcácer, and Trigueros arrived at the back post to send the ball into the back of the net and put the Yellows ahead.
Trigueros’ goal was a positive moment for the start of the game, but the celebration was soon dampened by an injury to Danjuma, which was a bitter moment after the Yellows has started well. The dangerous Dutch attacker was replaced by Yeremy Pino.
After this setback, the Submarine continued to take control of the game, combining well in the opposition half, and trying to find space in behind the Getafe defence. Just before half-time, Alcácer had to the ball in the back of then net, but VAR overturned the goal, denying the Yellows their second goal of the afternoon due to it being offside.
After the half-time break, the Submarine took to the pitch trying to assure the three points. However, the beginning of the second half did not have many good chances, and the first one went to Getafe. In the 71st minute, Gero Rulli made a great save at full stretch to deny Jaime Mata.
In the 83rd minute, Villarreal went close with a Boulaye Dia shot, which hit the post after he turned well in the area. Francis Coquelin started the move, and the midfielder impressed during the game in attack.
Soon after, Moi Gómez, after a great Samu Chukwueze pass, had a shot saved by David Soria after going one-on-one with the Getafe goalkeeper.
