The Yellows have lost to Club América despite deserving more
Villarreal ended their TST 2026 experience with a defeat to Club América (2-1). It was the same old story for César Arzo’s side, who once again lost in Target Score Time after going in level after the end of regulation time.
The Submarine had a bad first day, losing to Cagliari Calcio (1-2) and Fort Lauderdale Strikers (1-2), but knew that a win against the Mexican side, coached by former Villarreal player Miguel Layún, would keep them alive and probably see them into the Round of 32.
However, it was a bad start, with Francisco Rivera giving Club América the lead within the first three minutes. Despite that, Villarreal fought back less than a minute later, with Mario Gaspar’s low effort bringing the scores level (1-1).
The Yellow Submarine dominated possession, but could not find the back of the next, much like their previous two games of this year’s The Soccer Tournament. Regulation time ended 1-1, and in Target Score Time, a counter-attack saw Miguel Rebollo slot past Pepe Reina and end Villarreal’s hopes of progressing the tournament in Cary, North Carolina.
