The Yellows fought hard but were unable to overcome Bumpy Pitch
Villarreal’s TST dream is over. After finishing top of Group G, the Yellows faced Bumpy Pitch FC, one of the best third-placed teams. It was a tough match, with both teams going into the game with two wins and a loss in the group stage.
The Yellows started well, with a ninth-minute opener from Adrián Moron. Robin Walsh found him in space on the counter attack, and from the right flank he fired low and past the goalkeeper (0-1).
After taking the lead, the Yellows sat back and defended solidly for the rest of the first half to go into the break ahead.
The second half started badly for the Yellows. Just three minutes after the half-time break, a cross from the edge of the box found Cristian Martínez Borja three, and the forward headed past Sergio Asenjo (1-1, m.23).
Villarreal stayed sitting deep, and looking solid in defence, with Sergio Asenjo impressive one more.
The Yellows’ attack was focused on long balls over the top. Morón went close to a second, while Sergi Añó almost scored his third of the tournament with a flick off the back of his head.
The end of regulation time ended 1-1, and the Target Score was set at 2.
Villarreal failed to settle in Target Score Time, with Bumpy Pitch having most of the possession. With the teams playing 6v6, Martínez Borja managed to find some space in the area next to Asenjo and slot past him to end the match.
Like last year, the Submarine’s TST participation has come to an end in the Round of 32.
