Jaume Costa talked about Villarreal’s brilliant year that surpassed all initial goals
Today Villarreal full-back, Jaume Costa, talked about the Yellows’ fantastic season, in which they finished fourth in LaLiga, giving them the chance to play in the Champions League next year, and got to the Semi-finals of the Europa League. For the Valencia native, to aspire and have the opportunity to play in the biggest competition in Europe is a real privilege: “I have been fortunate enough to have already lived the Champions League experience close up. Not on the pitch, but I was in the chosen 18 players. To play in a Champions League match, to hear the anthem, the whole atmosphere is amazing and a dream for every footballer. It is a complete privilege and we are going to fight to be there. The play-offs are a bit scary because you come up against great teams, but our goal is to be 100% ready to show that we’re also a great team and haven’t finished fourth by chance”.
On a personal level, the Yellow defender explained that it has been a bittersweet year for him, as he had a few lingering injuries during the second half of the season. “The second half of the season was a bit difficult for me. After the injury I picked up against Rayo I had other problems, I had to push myself but then as I wasn’t stepping properly I had problems with my quadriceps. Now it’s time to rest, let the ankle get back to normal and then train maximally for next season”.
In Jaume’s mind, one of the best aspects of the season has been the great defensive work, which had a positive effect on the whole team. “Everybody who joined the team this season has adapted to the way we defend, not only defending with the four at the back. If all the eleven aren’t focused on defending we let goals in, as was the case in a few games, but I think our work in this respect has been outstanding”.
