Villarreal CF will face Arsenal FC, the top scorers in the UEFA Europa League this season (32 goals)
Villarreal CF will face Arsenal FC in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. It is the third time that the Yellows have faced the Gunners in European competition.
Both clubs met for the first time in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in the 2005/06 season. A historic moment for the Yellows, who were knocked out in an epic knockout tie where the Submarine were just 12 yards from glory. With a favourable result for Arsenal (1-0 at Highbury), Villarreal hosted the Gunners at the old El Madrigal with the dream of reaching the Champions League finals.
In the 2008/09 season, the Submarine once more came up against the Gunners in Europe’s elite competition, this time in the quarter-finals. The Yellows were knocked out after drawing the first leg at El Madrigal (1-1) and losing at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal, top scorers in the UEFA Europa League
Arsenal FC have reached the UEFA Europa League semi-finals after getting through the group stage with six wins from six, beating Rapid Vienna, Dundalk and Molde.
In the Round of 32, the English side beat Benfica (1-1 away and 3-2 at home), in the Round of 16, they knocked out Olympiakos (1-3 away and 0-1 at home), while in the quarter-finals they convincingly beat Slavia Prague (1-1 at home and 0-4 away).
With 32 goals to their name, Arsenal FC are the team to have scored the most in the Europa League this season. Unai Emery’s team will try and find the way to stop the Gunner’s attacking potential.
