The Yellows, after sealing promotion, will have an exciting year in the top-flight of women’s football in Spain
Villarreal Women have made history. Sara Monforte’s side were promoted to Primera División after an excellent season where they smashed all records. They were the best team in the Reto Iberdrola, as well as being the top scorers (56 goals) and the team to concede the fewest (19).
The Yellows had an almost perfect first stage. They were winners of Southern Group B, with an impressive balance of 13 wins, two draws and just one defeat in 16 games. This brilliant league start allowed them to go into the Promotion Stage with an ample advantage over their opponents.
At the end of March, they started the second stage, fighting to achieve a promotion which came on 25th April. With an impressive win over CFF Cáceres (4-0), the Yellows confirmed that they would be going up, and becoming the first women’s team in the province of Castellón to play in the top flight of Spanish football.
Sara Monforte, leader of a successful project
Villarreal Women have found their place in the top flight thanks to the leadership of Sara Monforte. In just three seasons with the Yellows, the head coach has overseen two promotions and has put the Submarine among the best teams in the country. As a reward for her excellent work, the Yellows recently handed her a two-year contract extension so she can oversee the project in the Liga Iberdrola.
Sheila Guijarro, top goalscorer of the Reto Iberdrola
Villarreal Women’s goalscoring capacities have been key to their success. Sheila Guijarro found the back of the net 17 times, and ended the season as top scorer in the second tier of Spanish football. Another stand-out player in terms of goalscoring is Salma Paralluelo, who got 15 goals, 12 of them in the first stage.
Salma Paralluelo’s sad injury
In an excellent season for the Submarine, the only real negative was the injury of Salma Paralluelo. The teenager picked up a serious injury a week before promotion was confirmed. A cruciate ligament tear in her left knee ended the season of one of the main components of an impressive Villarreal Women side.
