Villarreal beat Getafe with a Moi Gómez goal and get their third win in a row
There could be no better Christmas present. Villarreal beat Getafe at the Estadio de la Cerámica with a Moi Gómez goal (1-0) and got their third win in a row, with wins in LaLiga and the Copa del Rey. It was a more-than-deserved result, but the Submarine had to fight until the very end.
Javi Calleja once more trusted the same men who won at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. A starting XI who completely dominated the first half, with the best chances going to the Yellows.
The first of them came in the 20th minute. Xavi Quintillà crossed from the left and Manu Trigueros’ header grazed the crossbar. In a similar piece of play, Gerard Moreno hit the bar after a Moi pass. They were good chances and neither of them ended in the back of the net.
The Yellows were on top. Gerard nearly opened the scoring once again, making David Soria pull off a good save (m.32). Getafe were digging in defensively, waiting for their chance. They had it with a Jaime Mata header which went centimetres wide.
The deadlock was broken at the start of the second half. André-Frank Zambo Anguissa skilfully went past a number of opponents in an impressive run, which ended with a shot saved by Soria. The ball fell to Moi’s feet, with the Spaniard putting it int he back of the net. Anguissa’s piece of play was fantastic, and the goalscoring instinct of the Villarreal No.23 was spot on (1-0, m.51).
In the 61st minute, Getafe were reduced to ten men. Mathias Olivera, who came on at half-time, saw two yellows in quick succession, leaving his side a man down.
Getafe had to push forward. Despite that, Villarreal continued dominating and when they threatened on the counter, they looked dangerous. Karl Toko Ekambi had two great chances in a few moments.
The final moments weren’t ideal for the heart, with Getafe pushing forward and Villarreal failing to kill it off. The suffering was worth it though. A perfect end to 2019.
