The Argentinian goalkeeper has not conceded a goal and has been key in the two league victories
Villarreal’s start to the season has been spectacular: two wins, five goals scored and zero goals conceded are the statistics accumulated by Unai Emery’s side at the beginning of the domestic competition. This start to the league season is largely down to Gerónimo Rulli.
The Argentine goalkeeper has become a permanent fixture for Unai. Right now, the keeper from La Plata is the second keeper in LaLiga with the most saves, 11 in two games; six against Real Valladolid and five against Atlético de Madrid. Several of these saves were obvious goal-scoring opportunities, such as last weekend’s saves against Cunha or Yannick Carrasco. In addition, Gero is, along with Unai Simón and Dimitrievski, the only goalkeeper who has not conceded a goal so far in LaLiga Santander and, so far, has the best average of shots saved in the five big leagues (100%).
More than a goalkeeper
Rulli is not only a safe pair of hands between the sticks, he is also a great playmaker for Villarreal. The Yellows No.13 starts moves from the back, and is a playmaker. The Argentinian is the goalkeeper with the most completed passes in the competition (90), ahead of Marc-André ter Stegen.
The Argentinian, who arrived from Real Sociedad, has started all 68 games he has played for Villarreal, where he has played 6,146 minutes and kept 29 clean sheets.
