Asenjo, who returned to play after 11 months against Bayer, is happy to be back
Villarreal goalkeeper, Sergio Asenjo, was on top of the world to get back on the pitch, eleven months after sustaining his knee injury. The goalkeeper made his comeback in style in the Europa League Round of 16 against Bayer Leverkusen, in which the Submarine made their advantage count from the first leg (2-0) to get through to the Quarter-finals, with a goalless draw. The Yellows goalkeeper excitedly explained that he couldn’t think of a better way to comeback. “I’m really satisfied. I’ve worked very hard to get back up to this level and, even if it was because of a teammate getting injured, I’m proud of putting in such a good performance. Not in my wildest dreams did I expect to make a comeback like that, in an important European match and going above and beyond my expectations. I’m happy with my performance, I felt comfortable out there”.
The Yellow number 1 also believes it is a good reward for him and wants to show that he’s feeling good. “Now, I want to keep making things as hard as possible for the manager, because I want to show him and everyone that I’m consistently at the highest level. It has been a long wait, but I got my reward. These past months have been really hard, but I always felt that I was capable of going forward. The goal is to fight against Alphonse and Mariano for the starting spot, two great goalkeepers, and the team will benefit from that”.
