Villarreal came up short against Recreativo Huelva following a match that saw the Yellows fail to take advantage of Almeria´s earlier defeat. Victory would have seen the Submarine reduce the gap at the top of the table but in the end they finished up the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline after an out of sorts performance.
The opening minutes were all Recreativo although Villareal were at lest managing to keep their shape. With just five minutes gone the home side had a great chance to take the lead but Mariño in the home goal came to their rescue on a one on one situation. Recreativo continued to press and thing were getting more and more difficult for Julio Velasquez´s men with the passing of the minutes.
But on the half hour Villarreal had their clearest chance of the match when Hernan Perez, after receiving the ball on the edge of the area, hit a shot and Alejandro in the Recre goal could only watch as the Paraguayan´s effort smashed against the crossbar. The following minutes saw the game flow to and fro but with neither side able to break the deadlock.
The second half saw the Andalucian side come out all guns blazing, coming close to beating Mariño on various occasions. And it was Alexander who was to open the scoring after he collected a loose ball in midfield before running through the Yellow defence and then hitting a fierce shot at mid height past Diego Mariño for the first goal of the game. The goal served to calm the home side who now looked to sit back and counter although the Submarine were still finding it difficult to get into their opponent´s area.
With ten minutes remaining the pace of the game grew as Villarreal looked to breakthrough via the wings , only for the dismissal of Hernan Perez for a second yellow card to blow the
Yellows´options out of the water. Great work from Moi Gomez in the 87th minute meant Alejandro had to be at his sharpest to save the Alicante man´s cross shot before Jonathan Valle put the icing on the cake for the home side in the third minute of added on time with a fine shot following a fast counter attack.
