Villarreal shared the points with Las Palmas UD of Gran Canaria in their third away match of the season in a game that grew in intensity as it went on and that could have gone either way. For once attired in their away kit, the Submarine’s tally came via two goals from the penalty spot for Marcos Senna, while Thievy also notched a brace for the Canary Islanders.
On an uneven pitch that made accurate passing of the ball difficult, the Yellows took the lead after great individual play from Manu Trigueros culminated in the award of a penalty for the visitors. Marcos Senna took charge sending his sixth minute spot kick in at the right hand post of former Villarreal goalkeeper Barbosa. Las Palmas pushed forward in search of an equaliser and had two excellent chances to draw level with Javi Guerrero hitting first the post and then the crossbar. Approaching the midway stage of the first period Villarreal once again took control of proceedings again and Cavenaghi could have increased their lead only for the speed of Barbosa to come to the rescue of the Canary Island side.
The second half opened in the unlikeliest of ways with Las Palmas drawing level within 15 seconds of the restart when Javi Guerrero latched on a deflection, and Juan Carlos could only save his effort into the path of Thievy to hit the ball home. Eager to build on their early second half success and complete the comeback, the home side pushed forward and got their reward with Thievy’s second in the 70th minute. But a break from Hernan Perez turned the match around again for the Yellows after the Paraguayan was clearly fouled by Barbosa in the area and Marcos Senna stepped up to hit home his penalty, - once again past the home side keeper’s right hand post -, to draw his side level. In the closing minutes either side could have snatched the victory but as tiredness set in both teams eventually had to be content with a share of the spoils.
