Villarreal defender Pau Francisco Torres underlined this lunchtime that next Sunday's game against Athletic Club (2pm CET) is very important for the Submarine's European aspirations. "We know that Athletic aren't in the best of moments and we will try and make them consider this bad run even if it's only for another week. It's not normal that they've not won for so many matches. It's a possibility for us to get among the European contenders. Athletic have top-quality players. They're strong at home and we need to be focused for the 90 minutes, trying to defend by having the ball. Winning there would be very good news, although there is a lot of the league left," he commented.
The centre-back thinks it will be a tough game: "We need to show our best level away from home again. We were good in the first half against Atlético the other day, but the match got away from us due to mistakes. Now we're preparing for the Athletic game. San Mamés is a difficult ground, we we won away at Real Sociedad and Sevilla. They're obviously excited about the cup, but also they will want to return to winning ways at home," he underlined.
The match will take place at San Mamés, a stadium of which Pau has fond memories. There, Villarreal B beat Bilbao Athletic (1-3) in the first round of the promotion play-offs in the 2017/18 season: "San Mamés is an important stadium in our league. I have good memories of when we got through our play-off game there with Villarreal B, and hopefully I can get another win there," he added.
If the Yellows win, they could return to sit in the spots which will qualify for European football next season.: "We're going week by week. Every game is difficult and the three points count exactly the same regardless off who you face. If we're in good form, we could be fighting to be at Europe at the end of the season," Pau concluded.
