Villarreal CF manager, Javi Calleja, spoke to the media in the press room at the Training Ground today where he analysed the Yellows’ second league clash against Levante UD, which will take place this Friday at 10pm at the Ciutat de València stadium.
The Yellows boss stated that his side cannot wait for their second league game of the campaign: “The team’s spirits are really high. We were up in the game against Granada three times. Despite the draw, the team has not let it get them down. We’re really up for Friday and can’t wait to get going against Levante.”
Calleja analysed the side from Valencia, particularly their combination play and ability to cause danger in behind: “Our opponents have been trying out different formations. They play well in the middle and have players that are direct when attacking. They’re very dangerous going forward as they take advantage of the space in behind.”
The manager affirmed that the Yellow Submarine will be looking to pick up their first win of the season at the Ciutat de València stadium, after coming very close to doing so against Granada CF last Saturday. “We’re going to go all out for the three points, but always with respect for our opposition. Levante is a team with a lot of strengths who will make things difficult for us. We caused Granada a lot of problems, we created lots of chances and scored goals. We did also let goals in yes, but very few of those came as a result of defensive errors. We must keep working hard to minimalise the damage the opposition can do to us as much as possible.”
On another note, Calleja was visibly satisified with his squad for the 2019/20 season: “Every season the squad gets better. I’m really happy with the players that I’ve got this year. I’m enjoying working with all of them and I hope to continue until the end of the season. Last year, it was the coming together of everyone that kept us in the top flight. Last season was a difficult one and we musn’t forget it. The first objective is to make sure we stay up, the sooner the better. From there, I have confidence in the team to achieve even bigger goals.”
Furthermore, the Yellows boss talked about the arrival of new signing Ontiveros: “Ontiveros is a player we were all waiting for. We couldn’t wait for him to get here. He’s a different player. He’s great at taking on defenders and has a good strike. He has the ability to find spaces with solo runs and so with him we’ll be more vertical.”
To round up today’s press conference, Calleja confirmed that Alberto Moreno is fit and available to play against Levante UD: “He no longer has any injury problems and has trained as normal this week. He is available for Friday.”
