Villarreal U23s put together an important victory on Matchday 2 of the Premier League International Cup, beating Hertha Berlin 0-1. The only goal of the tie came from Mario González's head, making the most of a shot parried by the German side's goalkeeper.
Miguel Álvarez named a mix of players from Villarreal B and Villarreal C in his starting lineup as he searched for the Yellows' first victory in the competition this season, having drawn the first game against Swansea (1-1).
The first half was even, although as it progressed Villarreal U23s grew into the game. The clearest chance for the Yellows fell to Fran Álvarez, while Diego Fuoli had to stay strong in the Mini Submarine goal, with Hertha having opportunities to take the lead too.
In the second half, Villarreal U23s took complete control of the game. After a number of chances, the goal came in the 73rd minute. Akale cut in from the left and fired in a powerful shot with his right food, that the Hertha goalkeeper pushed across the area. There, González appeared to send the ball into the back of the net with a great header.
The Yellows were able to stay a goal up until the final whistle, although the Germans were dangerous in the closing moments with balls fired into the box. They even hit the post in the 88th minute.
With this result, Villarreal U23s have four points from their first two games in the competition. Their next opponent in Group E will be Liverpool on 21st November.
