Villarreal fell to Real Sociedad in their opening league match at the Estadio de la Cerámica. The Yellow Submarine were better for most of the match, but made too many defensive mistakes that ended up costing them.
The match started off on the right foot. Gerard Moreno did not take long to get back to scoring at the Estado de la Cerámica. Just like he used to before he went to Espanyol. It seemed as though no time had passed at all. The Yellow number 7 received the ball high up on the right wing, cut inside, beat two defenders and drilled a left-footed shot into the goal at the near post. Brilliant. (1-0, m. 15).
The opening goal gave the Yellow Submarine confidence and they wanted more from the match. Mario almost made it two with a powerful strike that forced Rulli to make a magnificent save. Cazorla was also playing well and showing his quality to the fans’ delight. As the minutes passed though, the side from San Sebastián picked up their tempo in search of an equaliser.
Right before the break, a defensive error was taken advantage of by Willian José and Real Sociedad were level. The blue-and-white forward was through one on one against Asenjo and smashed the ball past the Villarreal keeper to equalise. (1-1, m. 39).
The second half was a very even contest. There were few chances on goal and so Javi Calleja made some substitutes to go in search of the win. Raba came on for Morlanes, Fornals moved up and Cáseres sat back as a holding midfielder.
Then another mistake in the Yellows back line cost them again. Oyarzabal won the ball back and Juanmi finished the job with a shot from the top of the box. (1-2, m. 70).
Villarreal did not give up. Trigueros, who had just come on, had the equaliser on a plate as he got on the end of a cross into the box, but his first time shot flew over the bar. Moments later it was Toko Ekambi’s turn. The Yellow number 17 was through one on one against Rulli, but he could not find a way around the visitors’ goalkeeper.
Despite the Yellows’ determination and fight until the end, the second goal never came for the Yellow Submarine. Villarreal’s next match is against Sevilla FC at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium (Sunday, 8:15pm CEST).
