Villarreal CF Manager, Javi Calleja, was proud of his players’ effort to pick up a point against Átletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. “The team was very level-headed, showing a lot of maturity from the first minute. We knew what we were up against at a very difficult place to come, but we didn’t let them break us down. Their goal spurred us on to play our best football, to push forward and that’s how we got our reward”, he commented.
For Calleja, Villarreal deserved the draw: “In the first half we had the game under control, we progressed well with the ball, but we needed to be more clinical in the final metres. In the second half, when we were at our best, Atlético had one real quality play but from then on the game was ours”.
This point boosts the Submarine’s morale. “We have to keep this good momentum going and keep getting better. Today we maintained our balance better, they didn’t catch us out on any counterattacks and we’re optimistic for the Europa League”, Calleja assured.
Villarreal are going for more. “We’re towards the top of the table, there’s a lot of the league left to play and I'm happy with the players as they keep giving more and more. Every player is playing their part. We have a very complete squad and everyone is helping us to get to the top”, Calleja finished.
