Breath-taking. Villarreal took the three points against Las Palmas in a match in which the Yellows came back from Boateng’s goal with two of their own, courtesy of Sansone, from the penalty spot, and Bakambu, in injury time. The fans enjoyed another magical night. With this win, Fran Escribá’s side go 13 matches without losing, between LaLiga Santander (9) and UEFA Europa League (3) competitions.
The Submarine came close to taking the lead after great play by Jonathan dos Santos. The Mexican midfielder took advantage of a bad clearance by Raul Lizoain and lobbed the Las Palmas keeper, but the ball bounced back off the crossbar. The rebound was forced into the net by Bakambu and Soriano’s joint effort, but the linesman ruled them offside so the goal did not count.
The side from the Canary Islands got going after the first quarter of an hour and started to create plenty of danger. Jonathan Viera finished off a counter attack with a powerful strike that was met with an equally brilliant save by Sergio Asenjo (m.23). An outstanding stop. Only three minutes later, another Las Palmas has another chance. This time it was Boateng who had a shot after a Míchel cross, but his effort was just wide of the mark.
Las Palmas kept the attacks coming and after the first half an hour of play they broke the deadlock (0-1). Boateng scored an acrobatic goal that smashed the back of Asenjo’s net after a cross from the right wing. Unstoppable.
The goal enraged Villarreal. Manu Trigueros tried his luck with a long range shot that shaved the post, while shortly after it was Trigueros again whose spectacular bicycle kick sailed just over the bar.
The Submarine kept going in the second half and their efforts were eventually rewarded from the penalty spot. Sansone was taken down by Roque Mesa in the box and it was the number 18 himself who stepped up and tucked away the spot kick in the bottom left corner.
Fran Escribá’s side took control of the match, although Las Palmas were not out of it and were still creating danger on the counter. Bakambu came close to getting the winner after a Samu Castillejo cross, his effort brushing the crossbar. Unlucky.
The ecstasy came in injury time. Bakambu finished to perfection after getting on the end of a great through ball from Soriano. The French-Congolese striker was quick off the mark and buried his shot at the near post. The fans went mad with delight and started singing his name in union: "Ba-kam-bu, Ba-kam-bu, Ba-kam-bu". And not in vain. Three more points sealed at El Madrigal. Bravo!
