Find out about the many activities the club will be putting on for the match against Liverpool

It is a historic fixture that Yellows fans will live to the full. Villarreal CF have prepared a series of activities for the important UEFA Europa League Semi-final first leg against Liverpool FC, to be played at El Madrigal, to make it a truly unforgettable occasion (Thursday, 9:05pm CET).

The club will give out 20,000 free scarves

At the El Madrigal stadium entrances 20,000 scarves will be given out for free to Yellows fans, which feature the ‘Yellow Submarine’ motto. The aim is for fans to wave their scarves around in the air to create one big yellow wave as both teams walk out of the tunnel and onto the pitch. What’s more, the commemorative match scarves, made up of both teams’ colours, are already for sale in the official shops at only 10 euros each (see picture).

The ‘Yellow Submarine’ song will be played before the match

Right before the players walk out onto the pitch The Beatles’ ‘Yellows Submarine’ song (1966) will be played on El Madrigal stadium’s loudspeakers. This song has been linked to the history of Villarreal CF since the 1967/68 season when the club was playing for promotion to the Third Division once again, an objective they would go on to achieve in that campaign. Meanwhile, a group of young fans started to play this Beatles song on a battery powered record player during matches. And they sang it with their own lyrics: “Amarillo es el Villarreal / amarillo es / amarillo es” (“Villarreal are yellow / they are yellow / they are yellow”).

The Yellows will pay tribute to the Hillsborough victims

Villarreal CF and their fans will pay tribute to the victims of the tragedy that happened at the Hillsborough stadium on 15th April 1989 in Sheffield, when 96 people died as they were crushed against the stadium’s fencing after too many fans were allowed to enter the away stand. This disaster took place during the match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in the 1989 FA Cup Semi-final. The 96 people who passed away were all Liverpool fans. On the month of the 27th anniversary of that tragedy, the club and Yellows fans will show their support to Liverpool FC by holding a banner up, in the El Madrigal stadium’s south stand (Fondo Sur), when the teams walk out onto the pitch. The banner will feature the motto ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ and the number 96 in remembrance of the victims, all in the Villarreal CF colours.

A giant Submarine and live music on the streets of Vila-real

An inflatable Yellow Submarine will be paraded round the streets of Vila-real from 12pm CET to kick off, together with a marching brass band who will provide entertainment in the hours before Thursday’s big game in El Madrigal. Notably, it will be the same Yellow Submarine that has always accompanied fans on historic occasions for Villarreal CF. Giving those fans who wish to the chance to live the hours before the match to the full.

The Group of Fan Clubs (La Agrupació de Penyes) have also planned several events

The Villarreal CF Group of Fan Clubs have made a giant banner that will give colour to the stands of the home of the Yellows prior to the match against Liverpool FC. On it will read: ‘Sempre Groguets’, a club motto written in Valencian which means ‘Yellows Forever’, and it will be held up in the Tribuna (main stand) where the Group of Fan Clubs’ members usually sit in El Madrigal. At 5:30pm CET fans will meet in the Plaza Mayor (main square) of Vila-real, from where thousands of fans will walk to the stadium together, accompanying the inflatable Yellow Submarine and the marching brass band. Then at 7pm CET, it’s expected that the fans will gather at the Post Office roundabout to cheer on the team bus as it passes and carry it through the air to the stadium on a big yellow wave.

The Vila-real City Council will join the party

The Vila-real City Council also wanted to join in on the party and so have hung a giant Villarreal CF flag on the front of the Town Hall. They have also urged citizens to decorate their balconies with Submarine colours, be it with flags or scarves. The aim is to dress Vila-real in yellow and an advert has also been made for this.

Arrive at the match early!

As this match has been declared ‘high risk’, Villarreal CF ask fans to arrive at the stadium in plenty of time and avoid bringing backpacks or bags to make it easier to get into the stadium.
