Villarreal managed to secure a victory against Olympique Lyonnais by 0-2, being able to end its participation in the prestigious Emirates Cup with two victories out of two (VfL Wolfsburg 1-2 Villarreal CF, played yesterday). The Submarine's goals were scored by Bruno (penalty) and Leo Baptistao.
From the very beginning, both Villarreal and Lyon tried to play attractive football. Gerard Moreno enjoyed a clear scoring chance just two minutes after kick off, with a header that forced Gorgelin to perform a great save to prevent the ball going to the net.
French runner's up answered shortly afterwards. Kalulu dribbled and faced Areola but was not able to overcome the latter. The Yellow goalkeeper did an enormous save to keep the 0-0 (11th minute). Just five minutes later, Villarreal's fast counter attack ended in another clear chance for Castillejo that Gorgelin stopped.
The Olympique Lyonnais also had two very clear chances that were rejected by the crossbar. First a shot by Malbranque on the 20th minute and then a header by Koné on the 38th.
After the first 30 minutes, Espinosa was fouled inside te box by Mboumbouni and Japanese referee Ryuji Sato had no doubts. Penalty shot for Villarreal. The Submarine's captain Bruno Soriano scored the first goal of the night. The second goal for Villarreal arrived during the second half. It was the 54th minute of the game when Gerard Moreno passed an amazing ball to Leo Baptistao, who sent the ball to the net over Gorgelin.
The substitutions during the second half made the match look different. Marcelino got some fresh players on the pitch and during this time up to six players from the Academy played together, showing the club's focus on developing young players. Aleix and Trigueros played were the team's axis on midfield, along with Nahuel, center back Pablo Íñiguez and strikers Jonathan Pereira and Gerard Moreno.
Impecable performance of Villarreal against two very strong teams.
