The Villarreal CF coach praised the intensity and talent of an improved Sevilla side following the arrival of García Plaza (Wednesday, 7pm)
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media this Tuesday to preview the Yellow Submarine’s upcoming fixture against Sevilla FC, which will take place this Wednesday at 7pm at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
Having already secured a second consecutive qualification for the UEFA Champions League, Marcelino’s side have now shifted their focus to the battle for third place. To achieve that objective, overcoming the Andalusian outfit will be crucial: “We want to win and we’re going to give everything to do so. We want to finish third. We’ve been in that position for a large part of the season and we’d like to end it that way. The first step is to beat Sevilla. It will be difficult because of the opponent’s situation, although the team have improved their numbers since Luis García Plaza took charge”.
The Villarreal boss also highlighted the progress made by the Sevilla side, who have taken an important step towards safety in recent weeks: “They’ve managed to turn things around. Their recent home results have been good and have moved them away from the relegation zone. We’ll be facing an intense team, one that defends well and has talented players”.
Along the same lines, Marcelino assessed the strengths of the Nervión-based side: “We’re seeing a very intense Sevilla team, with fast players at the back. They attack space and depth well. They also have different ways of playing and plenty of quality going forward. I expect a highly competitive match”.
Finally, the Villarreal coach stressed the importance of focusing solely on the Sevilla match, while admitting it would be special to seal third place should his side win and Atlético Madrid drop points against Osasuna: “The only thing that depends on us is giving everything to beat Sevilla. The rest depends on other results. Of course we’d love to win, extend our positive run at home and secure third place in front of our fans. That would be very special, but our focus is entirely on our own game”.
