The Villarreal coach praised the team’s effort against a combative and desperate opponent such as Mallorca
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media in the Son Moix press room to analyse the draw against RCD Mallorca (1-1), a result that allows the Submarine to cement their place in third position.
“We want to finish third. It’s our goal. This point puts us six clear with nine still to play. On the final matchday we’ll face Atlético de Madrid in a direct duel,” said the head coach.
He also highlighted Mallorca’s intensity, driven by their situation, which caused difficulties for his side: “We didn’t lack intensity, but we lacked the ball. We weren’t able to win duels in the final third. We were a bit imprecise with that last pass. Mallorca are a team that press very high and also force you to play close to your own goal.”
Marcelino also pointed out the impact of the heat on both teams: “It was hot and it showed, but we already knew that. The players from both sides made a huge effort and they deserve credit for it.”
Finally, the Yellow Submarine coach looked ahead to the next match against Sevilla: “We want to win to get closer to that third position. We’re back at home, where we’re solid, against a rival like Sevilla who are also playing for a lot. Even though they won and that brings them closer to safety, we want to win to achieve the objective we’ve set ourselves.”
