The Asturian coach criticised the refereeing decisions and applauded the work of his players
Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media after the Groguets’ controversial 1-1 draw against Getafe CF at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
“We can’t talk about an unfair result. It’s 1-1 because both teams scored a goal. From that point on, we had more merit to win. What’s more, we should have won this match. In the end, a whimsical action by the VAR official, who is a referee who has been relegated, decided the match. I don’t understand the action. The application of VAR makes no sense. The ball is going to another zone and the player disputing the ball is offside. If the VAR standard were always this high, there would be a lot of penalties per game. The referee, moreover, is on the sideline and decides that there is nothing. The VAR referee has decided the match.”
Despite the rigorous refereeing, Marcelino was keen to underline the team’s good work, even though the victory escaped: “The work was good. I’m satisfied with the team. We had difficulties in the course of the match. Getafe are a very difficult team to face. But when we were so close to victory, a play like that deprived us of it.”
Precisely because of this good work by the Yellows, for Marcelino, the intervention from VAR is even more damaging: “We expected a difficult match, not very attractive, but we competed very well. That in a match with so much clashes and disputes, which we were controlling well, it ended up being decided by that action is even more hurtful.”
