Knowing how to dig in to beat Osasuna

Marcelino has shown his enthusiasm and commitment in what will be his return to the Estadio de la Cerámica

Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral appeared before the media this Friday to analyse the match against CA Osasuna, which will be played this Sunday at 2pm CET at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

The clash will mark the return of the successful Asturian coach to the club that was his home from 2013 to 2016: “I’m coming back as a coach of the home team. I’m very excited and grateful for the welcome we’ve received from the club and the fans. Now we have the responsibility to respond to the expectations generated. Honesty, hard work and dedication will be there, but we can’t guarantee results. Hopefully we can change them and satisfy our fans, who we are also asking for their help. With that and our efforts we have to make the Estadio de la Cerámica a fortress.”

For the first match of Marcelino García Toral’s new Villarreal, he is expecting a tough opponent in Osasuna: “It will be a hard game. It’s a team that has stabilised in the top half of the table. They are an intense, fast, vertical, incisive team that comes with a lot of people from the back. I like them from a footballing point of view. They are competitive. Although we’re focused on looking at ourselves and putting the negative results at home behind us”.

In the same vein, he assured that we have to forget the past and work to turn the situation around: “Strong teams are those that win at home and that is achieved by winning the first game. We have to wipe the slate clean, think about the immediate future and from here we have to be confident. Mistakes are implicit in the game, but when we are daring and have the necessary decision to face every moment of the game, which we have the ability to do, we will return to the normality of what this team is.”

Gaining confidence is another of the team’s objectives, and as Marcelino points out, they know that they will have to suffer to beat Osasuna: “What is most difficult is to overcome insecurity and that takes time. To win you have to suffer and as I tell the players, it’s better to suffer to win than to suffer after losing. I’m convinced that if we beat Osasuna, it will be by suffering.”

On the other hand, Marcelino also had words for his fans, to whom he wants to give great joy, but also asks for their help: “Our obligation is that our fans are happy with the team, but it is also important that they are with the team. In these moments of insecurity, we need them. We want to have the fans on our side. And with that support, we want to show how much we want things to work out.”
