Intertoto Cup 2004
The second European title in Villarreal CF history came just one year later in the 2004 Intertoto Cup. The Yellows opened the tournament against Danish side Odense, who they surpassed with no problems both away (0-3) and at home (2-0) in El Madrigal.
Spartak Moscow were the opponents in the third round. The Russian team also succumbed to the superior Yellows, falling at El Madrigal (1-0) and drawing in the second leg in Russia (2-2).
In the Semi-finals, Villarreal were paired with German side Hamburg, who were defeated by a solitary goal both at the home of the Yellows and in the second leg.
The Final was disputed by two Spanish teams: Villarreal CF and Atlético de Madrid. Villarreal won 2-0 at their home ground, but were defeated in the match at the Vicente Calderón stadium (0-2). However, in the end they were triumphant in the penalty shootout (1-3) and were crowned Intertoto Cup champions for the second consecutive season.
