Villarreal make history once more and manage to get past FC Bayern in a tough match

Incredible, historic, amazing… There aren’t enough adjectives to describe what Villarreal CF experienced at the Fussball Arena München. The Yellows drew 1-1 against FC Bayern and got through to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. A late Samu Chukwueze goal at the end of the game silenced the Bavarian stadium and saw the Submarine move on in the competition.

In the build-up to the match against FC Bayern, 1,500 Villarreal CF took to the streets of Munich, dying the Bavarian capital yellow. There was a great atmosphere, with the fans optimistic ahead of a historic UEFA Champions League night.

To face the German side, Unai Emery lined up with the same starting line-up that the Submarine had in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final (1-0). In the opening stages of the match, FC Bayern gave their all, looking for the equaliser. The Yellows, who were well organised in defence, resisted the home side’s attacks well.

In the 28th minute, FC Bayern had the first big chance of the match. Musiala’s shot in the heart of the area, after a ball played in from the right. Yellows goalkeeper Gero Rulli stopped the ball with a great save. Reacting to the Bavarian effort, Villarreal replied in added time with a Gerard shot that went off target.

At the start of the second half, FC Bayern showed their attacking potential with a number of crosses in from out wide and many goalscoring opportunities. In the 52nd minute, Lewandowski capitalised on an error as the Yellows played the ball out from the back to put the German side ahead with a low shot, which hit the post before going in. FC Bayern levelled the tie with more than half an hour ahead.

After the home side’s goal, Villarreal successfully resisted the danger that FC Bayern possessed. The minutes went on and the game was still up for grabs. It was still 1-1 on the scoreboard in Munich.

In the 82nd minute, Danjuma could have scored the equaliser with a low effort after Gerard Moreno sent him through. The Submarine were getting close to a goal. In the 88th minute, Samu Chukwueze made the dream come true with a great Villarreal CF goal.
