The Ecuadorian defender joins the Yellows on a free transfer from CD Alba Fundación
Villarreal CF have reached an agreement with Gigi Moreira, who will play for Villarreal Women for the next two seasons. The Ecuadorian defender joins as a free agent from CD Alba Fundación Femenino.
Experience at the back
Ligia ‘Gigi’ Elena Moreira Burgos (19 March 1992, Buena Fé, Ecuador) developed as a player in various clubs in her home country, such as Rocafuerte, Santo Domingo, 7 de Febrero and Unión Española. She later had short spells at Patriotas in Colombia and São José in Brazil before making the leap to Spanish football at the age of 27, joining Real Oviedo.
After one season with the Asturian side, the Ecuadorian centre-back went on to play for CDE Racing Féminas, Córdoba CF, Alhama CF, and most recently, CD Alba Fundación.
Gigi is also a full international with Ecuador, has worn the captain’s armband, and represented her country at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.
