Galatasaray: a new challenge against a historic Turkish side

The Submarine face Okan Buruk’s side on Tuesday at 6pm CET

The last match in Turkey, against a historic European side. The team coached by Quique Setién will face Galatasaray at the NEF Stadyumu this Tuesday, starting at 6pm CET. This will be the second of two friendlies that the Submarine will play in Turkey during the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after losing to Fenerbahçe (2-1) on Saturday.

Founded in 1905, Galatasaray are second in the Turkish Süperlig with 27 points. The club from Istanbul are a historic club with a spectacular record. They are the most successful Turkish club of all time in terms of trophies with 22 Turkish league titles, 18 Turkish Cups and 16 Turkish Super Cups to their name. They have also impressed in Europe, where they have won two titles, the 1999/2000 Europa League and the 2000/2001 UEFA Super Cup. These are the only European titles a Turkish team has ever won.

Their coach, Okan Buruk, is a Turkish coach with experience only in Turkey, where he has managed a total of seven teams. He was also the assistant coach of the Turkish national team from 2011 to 2013. Before joining Galatasaray this season, the Turkish coach managed Basaksehir, among others, where he won a historic league title, and Akhisarspor, where he won the club’s only Turkish Cup in its history.

The club’s name is given by the Karaköy neighbourhood in the Beyoğlu District of Istanbul, located on the northern shore of the Golden Horn. Its name comes from a monument in the area, the Galata Tower, a medieval tower built by the Byzantines. Finally, it should be noted that Galatsaray has in its ranks historic players such as Juan Mata, Bafétimbi Gomis and Mauro Icardi. They also have players who have participated in the World Cup in Qatar such as Haris Seferovic and Dries Mertens.
