FC Salzburg: the fury of the ‘red bulls’

Villarreal CF have faced the Austrian team on four occasions, with two wins for each side

FC Salzburg are old acquaintances for Villarreal CF. The Austrian side, who the Yellows will face in the UEFA Europa League Round of 32, have previously faced the Submarine a total of four times in the second biggest continental competition.

In the 2014/15 season, the Yellows knocked out the Austrians in the Round of 32, winning both ties (2-1, 1-3). The two teams also met each other in the group stage of the 2009/10 season, when the Austrian side won both games (2-0 and 0-1).

The route the ‘Red Bulls’ took to the Round of 32

FC Salzburg have reached the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 after finishing third in the UEFA Champions League Group A, where they faced Bayern Munich, Atlético de Madrid and Lokomotiv Moscow.

In Austria, the ‘Red Bulls’ are a dominant force domestically, where they have won the last seven league titles. In Europe, their best achievement was reaching the final of the UEFA Cup in the 1993/94 season, where they faced Inter Milan.

FC Salzburg, a classic continental side

FC Salzburg are one of the most important sides in the history of the UEFA Europa League. The Austrian side are taking part in the second biggest continental competition for the tenth time. They are the team to have played in the most editions, alongside Ajax.

The Red Bulls are the club with the second most appearances in the competition, only behind Villarreal CF, who have 81 games in the competition. The Yellows are also top of the goalscoring league, with 141 goals, and are the team to have won the most games in the history of the UEFA Europa League, with 43, one more than Sevilla FC and four more than FC Salzburg.

Salzburg Arena, a fortress in the Europa League

FC Salzburg have made their stadium into a fortress. The Austrian side have five wins and two draws from their last seven UEFA Europa League knock-out ties. The last defeat for the ‘Red Bulls’ at the Salzburg Arena was inflicted on them by Villarreal (1-3) in the 2014/15 season. The Submarine won thanks to a Luciano Vietto brace and another from Gio dos Santos, to turn a game around, after the home side had taken the lead thanks to a Djuricin goal.
