The Villarreal CF head coach underlined the team’s hard work during the 90 minutes

Unai Emery appeared in front of the press after the match against Elche CF (3-1) at the Estadio de la Cerámica. Here is what the Basque head coach had to say:

The three points

“We came into the game looking for the win through our style of playing, to improve certain aspects in defence and attack, and increase our aggressiveness. We were looking to on top of them with the ball and think of when to attack. We conceded some counter attacks and some chances from outside the box, but in the 90 minutes, we have come out victorious, and the results has come from there, consolidating the game.”

Previous draws

“The draws came from situations where we were happy, after conceding very few goalscoring chances, but today is three points, it’s a win that gives us confidence and where people start to have minutes behind them and score too. Everything is based on trust, and adding details to the style of play established.”

Rotations

“The players are getting confidence from game time. Paco had not played a lot of minutes, and he had to get back into shape after the injury in pre-season. He was training with the team and today he was very good.”

Keys to winning

“What was key to the win was keeping up the level of performance in the second half, and that wore our opposition out. We did a few things differently, and we were able to capitalise on certain moments of the match by doing extra work defensively to offer more things up front and show positive things on the pitch to come away with a win.”

Absences

“We have had various absences, like Parejo, Samu, Raba, Gerard… but that is what will happen during the season. We play a lot of games and we made certain chances today focusing on the win today, to introduce a few players. The changes were made thinking of the team. Sergio Asenjo, for example, was working very well and we had to give him a game. Iborra is also keen to start to help.”
