Monday night football at the Estadio de la Cerámica. Villarreal hosted Getafe in the last match of Gameweek 23. A vital match for Quique Setién’s team, who wanted to break the bad run in LaLiga and boost their spirits again after four consecutive games without a win in the league league.
It was a bitterly cold night at La Cerámica and it didn’t start in the best way for the Yellows. Getafe took the lead in the first dangerous move of the game. Enes Ünal headed a Djene ball from the right with great accuracy. The ball went straight into the top corner, unreachable for Pepe Reina.
Villarreal had to fight against the current from very early on. Getafe had won a precious goal and it was time to take away their lead. After away side’s, they sat back while the Submarine played close to their opponents’ box, although they were unable to find space in their rival’s well-populated defence.
Just before the break, Reina saved Villarreal from going two down in a piece of play reminiscent of the opener. The cross from the right was once again Djene’s, but this time it was Maksimovic who got on the end of it. It could have been easily been 0-2, which would have been a real blow to the Submarine’s morale. Villarreal were hitting hard on the counter-attack. Chukwueze equalised in the 44th minute after collecting the rebound from a hard shot by Étienne Capoue, which Soria was unable to block.
Villarreal came out with gusto at the start of the second half. In the 52nd minute, Samu Chukwueze popped up and with a fantastic slalom inside the area, he got the better of his par and gave the ball back to Morales who fired past Soria with an unstoppable cross-shot. The Estadio de la Cerámica’s impressive scoreboard showed a 2-1 scoreline.
The Yellows’ advantage forced Getafe to attack after almost an hour’s play, where they were entrenched in defence. This new situation created more space in defence. The Yellows dominated the ball and were waiting for the opportunity to strike the definitive blow in the match.
In the final minutes, Getafe came close to an equaliser, but luckily hit the crossbar. Villarreal, albeit with some suffering, pocketed three valuable points in front of their home fans.
Next up for Villarreal is a trip to UD Almería at the Power Horse Stadium on Saturday at 4:15pm CET.
