Villarreal lose to the Andalusian side despite a Pau Torres goal (2-1)

Villarreal lost to Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán . Sevilla took the lead through Rafa Mir, the Submarine equalised thanks to Pau Torres in the second half and the final goal to make 2-1 was scored by En-Nesyri in stoppage time. The Submarine called for a penalty in one of the last moves for a handball by Fernando, which the referee did not signal.

The stifling pressure from the home side made it difficult for the Yellows to get the ball out of the box from the very first minute. Despite this, the Submarine did not give up their style. Little by little, Quique Setién’s team gradually began to get to grips with Sevilla’s intensity.

However, in just a few minutes there were two pieces of bad news for Villarreal. First, José Luis Morales suffered a muscular injury in the 20th  minute. The Yellows No. 22 was replaced by Nicolas Jackson. Shortly afterwards it was 1-0. Rafa Mir finished off a counter-attack with a powerful right-footed shot into the top corner (m.33).

It was from then on that the Submarine began to find a way to create danger in front of Dmitrovic’s goal. Lo Celso had two chances in quick succession before he played a brilliant inside pass to Jackson, but the Senegalese forwards ‘s subsequent strike was denied by the Sevilla keeper.

Villarreal managed to equalise just before half-time, although the goal was ruled out for offside by Jackson, who had scored from Yeremy’s pass.

The game was end-to-end.. Suso crashed the ball against the post and shortly afterwards Foyth headed wide. With the minimal advantage for Sevilla it was time for half-time.

Setién’s side started the second half brightly. Jackson shot high before Gio Lo Celso played another inside pass to Chukwueze and the Nigerian’s shot was blocked by Dmitrovic. It was the prelude to Pau Torres’ 1-1 equaliser. The centre-back from Vila-real picked up a ball from a corner that Yeremy Pino returned at the far post for the defender to push in.

In the closing stages, the Yellows called for a penalty for a handball by Fernando, which the referee did not signal. Moments later, in stoppage time, it was 2-1. En-Nesyri headed home from a corner (90+3 minutes). The Submarine still had a chance to equalise when Cuenca’s shot went narrowly wide.

Villarreal’s next game will be on Thursday against RCD Espanyol at the Estadio de la Cerámica (7:30pm CEST).
