The Spanish-Russian midfielder is approaching his best form in a Yellow shirt
Denis Cheryshev was self-demanding and optimistic for what is to come this season. The Yellows number 7 assured that he is finding his best form physically, having put his injuries behind him. This season he has played 376 minutes between LaLiga (153) and UEFA Europa League (223) competitions, nearing his best in recent matches. “Gradually I’m feeling better. I’m getting more and more minutes and there are a lot of matches in the coming weeks, so I’m sure we’ll all get minutes. I’m getting over the niggles I’ve had too. I hope to get back to my best level soon. I’m on the right track to get there, but I don’t know if I’m far from it or not. I’m just giving my all”, he commented.
At the moment, the Spanish-Russian midfielder is only thinking about beating Athletic Club in San Mamés next Sunday (8:45pm CET): “We have to focus on Sunday’s match as San Mamés is a very difficult ground to play at. Both teams want the ball so it will be a tough match. We’re going to try to keep going along the same lines we have been to keep this good run going”.
After the first 11 LaLiga Santander matches, Villarreal are currently in third place in the table with 22 points. “It’s too early to talk about distances between some teams and others. There are many matches left. Everything will be decided in the final stretch of the season. We’re going to try and pick up as many points as we can and take it game by game. It’s wrong for us to become obsessed with chasing Madrid and Barcelona. Right now, our aim is to stay in 3rd or 4th place”, he affirmed.
In terms of the in-squad competition, Cheryshev praised his teammates’ hard work: “Samu Castillejo and Roberto Soriano are playing very well, but there are a lot of games, so I’m sure there are minutes for everyone”.
