The Yellows will face the Londoners for the first time in an official competition
Villarreal CF will face Chelsea FC this Wednesday, at 9pm CEST, in the UEFA Super Cup. Windsor Park in Belfast will host the meeting between the two teams who have never previously met before.
The Submarine will be taking part in this competition for the first time after being crowned UEFA Europa League champions last season, beating Manchester United in a penalty shootout in Gdansk (Poland) that was not good for the heart.
The Yellows’ opponents have more experience in this tournament. It will be Chelsea’s fifth time taking part in the UEFA Super Cup. The Londoners are going into the game as the Champions League winners, a trophy they won for the second time in their history after beating Manchester City in Porto (1-0).
Despite having taken part in four finals, the English side have only previously lifted one UEFA Super Cup. They did so in 1998, beating Real Madrid 1-0 in Monaco. From then on, they lost in the finals in 2012, against Atlético Madrid (1-4); in 2013, against Bayern Munich (1-1, 4-5 on penalties), and in 2019, against Liverpool FC (2-2, 4-5 on penalties).
