The Yellows coach was extremely happy after the convincing win against Sevilla FC
Javi Calleja, Villarreal CF manager, was extremely happy after the convincing win against Sevilla FC (3-0): “I’m enormously pleased with the team’s commitment. The first 45 minutes were perfect in terms of how we played and the goals we scored. From the start to the end you could see a team that knew what they were playing. When we had the ball, we knew what to do with it and we looked to exploit Sevilla’s weaknesses. For me, the team transmits security. In the final few minutes, we knew how to manage key moments of the game.”
The coach hailed his players’ performances: “Today, the middle of the pitch was fantastic. The players managed moments in the game will and were connected throughout. I see the team as a solid side, and one that makes me feel safe. We have to have our feet on the ground, carry on growing and carry on working with the same humility. The substitutions brought a lot, they did a great job. The line to follow is clear, and we have to continue like this. The Villarreal we should be is this one.”
Furthemore, Calleja underlined his side’s commitment: “Today, the team wanted to win. We played a great game. Every day you can see commitment, both during games and training sessions, and we had to put it into practice in a match like today’s.”
The head coach also highlighted the role of the fans during the match: “It was an extraordinary atmosphere. You have to take your hat off to the fans. The commitment to the club comes from those on the pitch as well as those off it. That’s the path to follow.”
To conclude, Calleja analysed the next match for the Yellow Submarine, the second leg of the UEFA Europa League against Sporting Clube de Portugal, which will take place at the Estadio de la Cerámica (Thursday, 6:55pm CET): “We will go onto the pitch with a team as competitive as the one we saw in the first leg in Portugal. We will try and find the best team to win.”
