The Villarreal Manager was very excited to start preseason at the Ciudad Deportiva

More excited than ever. Villarreal CF Manager, Javi Calleja, was very optimistic ahead of the 2018/19 season on the day that the Submarine started preseason training for the 2018/19 season. “This is the first year that we can start from scratch practically. The expectations are very high. We know our squad and I believe that we can start very well to finish even better. Many of the players were here last season and we have also had some reinforcements. I see a great squad to work with and we have all of our positions covered”.

In fact, Javi Calleja highlighted that the objective should be to better ourselves and do even better than last year’s spectacular season: “I dream about improving on last season. That requires a lot of work. Last year we encountered a lot of problems that we were able to overcome. The first thing to do is to make sure we stay up and from there we don’t have any limits”.

With respect to the Yellows preseason schedule, Calleja praised the level of their opponents: “We wanted to play a lot of matches this preseason. We will face a lot of tough opponents and it will be a great preseason. The training camp in Navata will help us to get to know each other better and let us do more specific training”.

The Yellows fans are just as excited. “I am happy that the fans are excited. We will look to play good football and engage the fans from the start. Every season we want to get better. This is going to be our aim”.

As for the style of play, the Manager stressed that it will be the same as the last season: “We will continue to use different formations according to each game. The idea is to take initiative by keeping possession of the ball with a purpose, which is to score goals. We want to be an offensive team that has and shows its spirit. The most important thing is to score more goals than the opposition. My purpose is to instil a style of play and to then see that on the pitch. We want to be as high up as possible.”

Lastly, Calleja emphasized the importance of being able to count on Bruno and Cazorla: “Santi Cazorla is going to start with the group from the first day. If all goes as planned and feelings are good, he would be fantastic reinforcement for the team. We’re very positive about Bruno, he has spent the holidays working hard and is on his way to rejoining the group”.
