The goalkeeper underlines that the team is optimistic and capable of getting through to the next round
Villarreal goalkeeper Andrés Fernández appeared in front of the media to analyse the current situation regarding the Yellow Submarine, who return to UEFA Europa League action with the first leg of the Round of 32 against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Thursday (9pm CET). The Yellows No.13 says that playing in European competition is always exciting: “It’s a great tournament. The team is really keen on getting to the next round. We have a great squad and we can approach the game sure of ourselves.”
The shotstopper recognises that a triumph on Portuguese soil would be a massive morale boost ahead of upcoming matches: “It’s a match where we can fight to defend our shirt with pride. It’s an opportunity to play a great match and be confident ahead of the future. Winning in Lisboa would be a massive boost to morale.”
Despite that, Fernández hailed the attacking potential of the Lisbon side: “They’re one of the strongest teams in Portuguese football. There’s always a great atmosphere at the ground. What’s more, they’re a really strong team offensively. It will a really nice match to play in.”
Finally, he stood by the need to get a win to turn things around and change the dynamic to a more positive one: “We’ve got better defensively. The squad has quality in it. What we don’t have and what we need is victories.”
