Villarreal B get their first ever win away at UE Cornellà thanks to a magnificent goal from the Valencian midfielder in the last minute
A great goal that was more than worth three points. The Mini Submarine beat UE Cornellà and got their first ever victory away to the Catalan side (1-2) thanks to a fantastic strike from Sergio Lozano in the closing stages, which gave Villarreal B the three points in a match that looked like it was going to end all squad. The Valencian midfielder’s goal was pay off for the good performance from the Yellows at one of the toughest grounds to visit in their league.
The opening minutes of the tie promised a hard-fought clash, and there were not many good chances. The first of the match came with half an hour on the clock, when Carlos Blanco hit the post after a set piece.
In the 37th minute, UE Cornellà showed their danger with Nana making Diego Fuoli pull off a great save. Only three minutes later, the Mini Submarine took the lead through Edu Espiau. The forward swept the ball into the back of the net, making the most of the goalkeeper pushing out Diego Collado’s cross from the right.
After the Yellows’ goal, the Catalan side looked to set pieces to equalise.
Just before the break, Espiau had a great chance to increase his side’s lead, but the forward was denied by the UE Cornellà keeper in a one on one.
The Mini Submarine kept on going after the break, with Álex Millán going close ten minutes into the second half. The forward was unable to get proper contact on a great cross from Goyo from the left, with a defender clearing it off the line.
Despite not having many great chances in the second half, with 73 minutes on the clock, UE Cornellà equalised through Eloy, who connected with a Pablo Fernández pass to send the ball into the back of the net.
With just one mintue of normal time left, and with the game looking like it was set to end in a draw, Lozano’s boots produced a piece of magic with a powerful long-range effort that flew past the goalkeeper.
The midfielder’s goal gave the Mini Submarine their first win at the Nou Municipal de Cornellà, where they had previously played five times without a victory. The three points in Catalonia give Miguel Álvarez’s side 17 points, meaning they are joint leaders of Segunda División B Group 3.
