Two goals by Bakambu give Villarreal the three golden points against a feisty Leganés

Villarreal pick up a hugely important win against Leganés thanks to two goals by Bakambu, one of those in the final minutes of the match, which were enough to cause a heart attack. The ‘pepineros’ had previously equalized in injury time through Guerrero.

The Submarine came out strong and determined to open the scoring in the first few minutes. With only a few seconds on the clock the Yellows almost took the lead. Jaume Costa put in a cross from the left wing and Sansone hit a left footed volley that forced Herrerín to make a stretching save.

As the minutes went by the match got more and more even. Villarreal had most of the possession, but Leganés defended with great organization. This meant the next chance did not come until half an hour had passed. Trigueros played a brilliant through ball to Sansone and the number 18 pulled his shot just wide of the far post. The ball brushing the woodwork. Unlucky.

Leganés had a decent chance just before the break. A scramble in the box finished with a Siovas shot that forced Andrés to make a diving save.

Fran Escribá’s side managed to take the lead in the second half with a top quality play. Soldado back-heeled the ball to Bakambu and the Yellow number 17 hit a bullet of a first time shot into the bottom corner (1-0, m. 67).

With the Submarine up by one, the home side looked to be solid at the back and attack on the counter to try and sentence the match.

Then, when it seemed that the game would finish 1-0, a moment of football madness came. First it was Leganés who scored, equalizing through Guerrero who took advantage of a loose ball in the box, smashing it past Andrés. All seemed lost, but then Bakambu stepped up once again. The French-Congolese striker scored from a Jonathan dos Santos cross from the left and sent the stands of the Estadio de la Cerámica absolutely wild. A heart attack worthy finish.

Villarreal’s next match is on Tuesday against Atlético de Madrid at the Vicente Calderón stadium (9:30pm CET).
